Showing love with yarn and books

My Mom always makes the best chocolates and sweet treats for Valentine's Day (see picture below). She keeps us well supplied in goodies, so I never feel the need to look for or make any sweets. So here is the dilemma, what do I get the kids for Valentines Day? Part of me thinks it is silly to support an artificial holiday designed to encourage people to spend money or feel bad if their relationships don't measure up to some fantasy that doesn't really exist.

On the other hand I love my kids so much that I transform from a mostly rational human being into a lovey dovey pile of goo. It makes me want to make pinterest perfect Valentine card/goodie bags and heart shaped preschool part snacks. This year I mostly restrained, but I decided to combine my desire to knit with my desire to make red and pink things. I found a this hat pattern for my youngest daughter, and then this ear warmer for my eldest daughter. For my son, I decided to make a Dr. Seuss thing one, thing two hat, that I temporarily added white edging to. My plan is to take the edging off after today, add some blue edging, pom-pom and the thing one circle.

I enjoy knitting and crocheting, there has always been something very satisfying about creating something tangible and useful (well at least somewhat useful). I also don't do a great job of sitting still so its nice to have something to keep my hands busy as I watch netflix, or talk with a friend. I think it was a good fit for us this year I enjoyed making them and the kids seem to like wearing them.

My favorite part of the day by far was reading to the kids. I had picked out these books for a bunch of random sentimental reasons, and I think it worked out (We're Going on a Bear Hunt, Fancy Nancy: Heart to Heart, Fancy Nancy: Budding Ballerina, Llama Llama I Love You, LOVE from the Very Hungry Caterpillar, Good Night, I Love You). We read the stories to the kids when they woke up this morning, but the kids got really excited at bed time. I must have read each book two or three times. It was wonderful. I think this is worth trying to make into a tradition.
