Kindergarten Confetti
My baby is starting kindergarten, and I am barely keeping it together. Thankfully her teacher sent us home from open house with some magical confetti to help us get excited for this new adventure.
I'm not an especially sparkly person, but boy do I make sparkly babies. My girls love anything that shines or sparkles. I tried when they were younger to mix in some neutral clothes, but I eventually I realized that it wasn't worth trying to change them. Plus, sparkles make them happy, and I love to see them happy.
Fast forward to open house. We go through the normal introductions, fill out forms, and tour the room. Then as we are getting ready to leave, the teacher hands us a card to read the night before school. I didn't much of it at the time, but that night as I was putting things away I found the card and stuck it by the chalkboard key hanger so I would be sure see when we needed it. Despite its prominent position I forgot to read the card with her at bed time the night before school starts. Now its morning and we are mostly on schedule for getting to school on time, but our soon to be kindergartener is fighting with me about everything. I take a few big breaths and sit down to sip my coffee, so that I don't loose my temper. I figure that she is just a little anxious about the first day and that is why she is fussy, so I need to help her get relaxed and ready for the day. That is when I see the card. Perfect diversion.
The card is sealed and I didn't peak, so I had no idea what was inside. As we read the letter she got excited. We decided to go outside and throw the confetti in the air so the magic would go everywhere. Then we picked up as much as we could so she could take the confetti with her, in case she needed any extra magic during the day.
That afternoon at the bus stop I learned that this wasn't some cosmic sparkle connection between my daughter and her Kindergarten teacher, but rather this is done for all classes, and has been a tradition for a few years. None the less, it was exactly what we needed to start the day, and by the time she got home off the bus she was fine, and hardly even seemed excited to see me. I guess that means she is adjusted to the whole Kindergarten thing, now I just need to get used to the idea.
